HISTORY OF GOLDENDOODLES
The Goldendoodle is one of the latest additions to the “doodles” family or poodle mixed breeds. However, due to their amazing qualities, they, along with Labradoodles and Cockapoos, have become one of the most popular and beloved of all doodles.
No one knows exactly where the term Goldendoodle comes from, or who the first breeder was, but legends abound. One such legend is that the term was coined by the Neelands family in 1992. When asked what type of breed her family pet was, they always said that it was a “Goldendoodle,” and the name stuck.
What is known for sure, however, is that the breeding started during the 1990s in North America and Australia, after the popularity of Labradoodles and Cockapoos became apparent. This cross was promoted as a larger doodle that only sheds lightly and is allergy-friendly. The fact that the Goldendoodle is a cross is between two of the most beloved breeds in the USA, the Golden Retriever and Poodle, which are known for their intelligence, temperament and trainability, helped the popularity of this wonderful doodle immensely.
Since it is still a relatively new cross breed, most puppies are a product of first generation or F1 breeding, although many breeders now offer only later generation and multigen goldendoodles.
